Great! Here's lesson #1:
a. Speak as quickly as possible and slur your words.
b. Use thousands of words that have multiple meanings (ex: "ainda" means both "still" and "yet").
c. Abbreviate as many words as possible so foreigners haven't a clue. Obrigada is just "brigada." "Está bom" is "ta bom" or usually just "ta."
Lesson #2:
Make sure to use plenty of gestures. There is a strong Italian influence on the language as well as the culture. (Ex: Brazilians love pizza, and there's a pizza place on every block.)
Lesson #3:
To ask a question, say a statement with a higher intonation & emphasis at the end to catch the listener's attention.
Statement: Ele VAI a casa.
Question: Ele vai a CASA?
Lesson #4:
Don't trust the phrasebook. Nobody says that. See lesson #1c.

Another good way of improving your portuguese is just to line up. Whenever you stand on a line in Brazil, it is customary to talk to people and complain together!
